Looking for a Job in Victoria? Where to Start

6 minute read

Job-seeking might not make your list of top ten activities, but it’s exciting nonetheless. A new job can bring fresh opportunities, new friends and a chance to expand your skills. And if you’re looking for a job in Victoria, you’ll have plenty of variety.

In this article, we’ll first look at the employment environment in Victoria, and then we’ll look at the first steps you can take toward finding the right position for you, even if you don’t have any experience or you’re just leaving school.

Biggest Industries in Victoria

Although Victoria is home to a wide variety of industries, these are the five largest sectors, according to the Australian Labour Market Update from July 2021.

  • - Health Care and Social Assistance (14.0 per cent)
  • - Retail Trade (10.4 per cent)
  • - Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (10.0 per cent)
  • - Construction (9.2 per cent)
  • - Education and Training (8.9 per cent)

As you can see from the percentages, the top five only make up about half of the industries in Victoria, and that’s good news. With a diversified job market, it’s more likely that everyone will find a position that suits them well.

Smaller but significant Victoria job sectors include manufacturing, food services and accommodation, public administration, agriculture, postal services and warehousing, telecommunications, financial services and insurance.

With so many options in the area, there’s something for everyone.

What About Jobs in Victoria for People With Professional Challenges?

Even with so many opportunities in Victoria, you might wonder if there’s a job for you if you have professional challenges like no work experience, a lack of post-school qualifications, low English proficiency or low confidence and self-esteem.

If you’re facing employment challenges like these and have been unemployed for more than six months or are at risk of long-term unemployment, you might be eligible for the Jobs Victora Employment Services (JVES) program.

At Asuria, we believe in you. We know that you have skills and talents that will be helpful to employers, so we have developed a process to help you and other job seekers concentrate on your strengths and find the just-right position.

How to Find a Job in Victoria

The process is straightforward, and you can start it right away if you’re ready. Of course, depending on your unique circumstances, the process might look slightly different, but this is the typical path for our job seekers.

1. Reach out to us at Asuria

The first step is to get in touch with us. You can call us at 1800 773 338, or you can fill out this form. It’s a simple step, but we understand that the first step can sometimes be the most intimidating. So take a deep breath and move forward.

2. Talk with a Jobs Victoria Mentor

If you connect with us through our website, one of our Jobs Victoria Mentors will get back in touch with you to discuss your professional strengths and opportunities. You will introduce yourself in more detail and tell us what kind of jobs you prefer. Then, your Mentor will ask questions to see if you’re eligible to participate in any of our matching services.

3. Work with Appropriate Services

After the initial consultation, we’ll begin working with you to guide you toward your new job. This might take several different forms.

For example, we might immediately start matching you with employers seeking your skills, or we may recommend that you begin with a training program. Some job seekers work to build their interviewing skills and confidence before taking the plunge.

Jobs Victoria Employment Services

At Asuria, we offer personalised and tailored services that support and connect job seekers and employers through the Jobs Victoria Employment Services (JVES) program.

As a Jobs Victoria Partner, we help job seekers prepare for new positions through mentoring, training and development. We also work closely with Victorian employers to identify precisely the skills and experience they seek.

Additionally, we’ve built links with community organisations and employers to help connect job seekers with a network of reliable employment opportunities across various industries, like those mentioned above.

And after job seekers and employers are connected, we provide ongoing support for up to 12 months. We do this to ensure that everyone has an opportunity to succeed. A smooth and seamless transition into the workplace sets you up for long-term success.

Are You Ready?

If you’re feeling ready to take the first step toward your new job, you’ve come to the right place. Begin the process by filling out this form, so one of our Jobs Victoria Mentors can get in touch to learn more about you.

Even if you don’t have any previous work experience, we can guide you through the job-seeking process and help you find a fulfilling position. We look forward to speaking with you!
