What is the Transition to Work Program?

6 minute read

For many young people, transitioning from high school to full-time employment poses challenges. Unfortunately, without assistance, some young adults lose their way or fail to thrive. That’s why the Australian Government has developed the Transition to Work program - to help young school leavers connect with the resources and opportunities they need to find and keep jobs they love.

Here at Asuria, we love to see the happy results stemming from participation in the program. Take Tori, for instance. Working with her Asuria Youth Job Coach, she enrolled in an online training course and earned her Certificate III in Business. In addition, Tori took part in group-based learning in topics including design and goods and services along with her online studies.

With constructive credentials under their belts, young people like Tori gain confidence in their ability to find career-building opportunities. And employers happily hire well-trained employees who are ready to strengthen their teams.

Who is Eligible for the Transition to Work Employment Service?

To take part in Transition to Work, you must meet the following requirements:

  • - Be between 15 and 24 years old.
  • - Hold Australian citizenship or a permanent visa, New Zealand Special Category Visa, or Nominated Visa (including Temporary Protection Visa or Safe Haven Visa.

Your eligibility also depends on whether you:

  • - Are participating in another government employment service such as jobactive.

How Does Transition to Work Prepare Me for Employment?

TtW helps you develop skills, so you have the know-how and confidence to make progress in your professional life. Depending on your career path, your training might include some combination of these preparations.

1. Developing Practical Skills

Employers don’t always have the required time or resources to get you up to speed by teaching you on the job. If an applicant already has needed skills, however, employers can put them right to work. Therefore, the Transition to Work program helps young people develop practical skills that employers are seeking right now. With valuable abilities in your skills stack, you’ll be an attractive candidate for many employers.

2. Getting Education or Training

Often, young people need additional education or training to make progress in their chosen fields. Maybe you need to take some courses or earn certifications. Alternatively, an apprenticeship might be the perfect option for advancing your career. TtW helps facilitate training and educational experiences for teens and young adults at risk for long-term unemployment.

3. Finding Work Experience Placements

One of the most frustrating aspects of looking for a job is that most employers want to hire people with experience. But many young people don’t yet have any experience under their belts. By working with local employers and organisations, TtW matches young people with work experience placements to get you the practice you need to be an attractive candidate. When potential employers see that you’ve had success in the workplace, you’re more likely to land a good job.

4. Searching for a Job

Even after you’ve developed practical skills, taken some courses and participated in a work experience placement, you still don’t have a job. But TtW doesn’t leave participants high and dry. Your Coach will help you in your job searching, preparing you for your interviews and helping you select the correct positions to apply for.

As a TtW partner, we will connect you with local job opportunities and assist with every aspect of your search. No question is too silly. Remember, everyone starts in the same place. No one is born knowing how to find a job.

Clearly, there are many benefits for young people who participate in Transition to Work. But that’s not where it ends. Employers benefit from the program as well.

How Do Employers Benefit From TtW?

Finding good employees is not easy, especially these days. In regional Victoria, the unemployment rate is 3.2%, and employers are scrambling for qualified workers to fill positions. Can Transition to Work help? Yes, by:

  • - TtW provides pre-employment skill training, so you don’t have to spend so much time getting employees up to speed after they’re hired.
  • - Work experience placements allow employers to try workers out to see if they’re suitable for the position.
  • - Employers may receive Youth Bonus wage subsidies of up to $10,000 (GST inclusive) for offering ongoing employment to TtW job seekers.
  • - Ongoing post-placement support to ensure that the new employee settles into the job and transitions well.

As you can see, the Transition to Work program provides significant benefits to employers and job seekers alike.
