On Thursday 11 September, 9 proud Indigenous graduates celebrated their achievements aboard the Mari Nawi at Circular Quay. Surrounded by family, friends and community, they marked the completion of Tribal Warrior’s Maritime Operations Training Program and the beginning of new careers on Sydney Harbour.
This latest graduation is part of our ongoing partnership with Babana Aboriginal Men’s Group and Tribal Warrior Aboriginal Corporation. Together, we are committed to creating employment opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people through maritime training programs that provide skills, confidence and clear career pathways.
Indigenous maritime training in action
Over three weeks of intensive training, participants worked alongside Tribal Warrior’s maritime trainers aboard the Mari Nawi and Lady Northcott. Each graduate successfully achieved a Certificate I in Maritime Operations (General Purpose Hand), learning essential survival techniques, firefighting, first aid, vessel safety and nautical terminology.
With these qualifications, graduates are now job-ready for roles across Sydney’s maritime industry, from ferry services to harbour operations.
Pathways to Sydney Harbour jobs
The Indigenous Maritime Training Program is designed not just to provide skills, but to connect participants directly into employment. Asuria and Babana Aboriginal will continue to support this latest intake of graduates as they step into work across Sydney Harbour.
This graduation also reflects the continued support of industry partners. Transdev Australia, operator of Sydney Ferries, is creating pathways into ferry operations across 38 wharves and 10 routes, while NRMA Marine is opening opportunities across the wider maritime and tourism sectors. Together, their support ensures that graduates have multiple avenues to build long-term, sustainable careers on the harbour.
Strengthening culture, community and careers
The ceremony was more than a certificate presentation. It was a celebration of resilience, community pride and cultural connection, as well as a step forward in creating long-term Indigenous employment opportunities in Sydney.
As the only Indigenous maritime training company in Australia, Tribal Warrior continues to lead the way in preparing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people for careers on the water. Together with Babana Aboriginal, this latest group of graduates has shown how training, culture and opportunity can come together to create brighter futures on Sydney Harbour.
