Seasonal harvesting jobs the pick of the crop

4 minute read

There's something pure about working on the land. Waking up at the break of dawn, breathing in the fresh morning air, and getting ready for the day ahead.

As the sun rises, your day begins. You spend your working hours in the warm summer sun, engaging with nature and physically occupying yourself. Working out in nature with your body leads to a rewarding sense of satisfaction that you've contributed to something authentic, and as your day ends, you feel physically tired but mentally refreshed and ready to enjoy your evening. No late nights, no checking emails, no after-hours phone calls.

Sounds idyllic, doesn't it?

And the reality is, this flexible work is readily available for all Australian job seekers allowing them to travel to Australia at their own pace while also working and earning money.

Here are our top tips for securing harvest work in 2019.

Choose where you want to work

Do a bit of research about where you want to work. Perhaps you’d like to harvest grapes in Victoria’s Yarra Valley, pick cherries in Orange, NSW, or perhaps you’d like to go mango picking in Darwin. Learning about the area you'd like to work in will give you further understanding of what sort of climate to expect, how far the nearest town is, and what sort of day-to-day seasonal work you may be doing.

Establish what kind of work you want

Set out your goals and outline what you want to achieve in your harvest work. If you want to save money, create a budget that takes into consideration how much money you’ll earn in the time, you’ll be working.

If you’re interested in gaining new skills, ensure that the farm you’re applying for is aware that you’re up for new challenges and want to learn more about the agricultural side of the business. If you’re undertaking the work as a physical experience, ensure that you’re fit and healthy to get the most out of work.

Create an engaging application

As with all job applications, it’s important to tailor your cover letter and resume to your potential employer. Suggest a time to discuss the opportunity over the phone or in person to show your enthusiasm. Try and be specific about why you want the seasonal work, and why you’re the right person for the job and their business.

Farm and harvest work is a rewarding opportunity that allows job seekers to seek new challenges and experience more of Australia while earning a wage. While the work can be physically demanding and subject to inclement weather, your harvest experience can be richly rewarding when you walk away with new skills, new friends and a new appreciation for working on the land.

Seasonal Work Incentives Trial

If you’re an eligible job seeker on Newstart or Youth Allowance, working seasonally could lead you to an extra $5,000-all without reducing your government payments.

The Australian Government’s Seasonal Work Incentives Trial allows job seekers to enter the horticulture industry and gain valuable work experience in an evolving industry.

Harvest work covers various outdoor jobs such as picking and packing fruit, nuts and other crops, pruning and spraying, and even operating light machinery. Not only will you have the opportunity to work in the great outdoors, you’ll also be eligible for travel and living away from home allowances, all while gaining valuable experience in the horticulture industry.

Harvesting jobs are a great way to explore Australia and work at your own pace while meeting like-minded workers, travellers and expert farmers.

If you’re looking for employment but stuck for ideas, why not give harvest work a go? Seasonal work can lead to long-term job opportunities, learning new skills and experiencing the fruits of your labour – literally!
