Voyages pioneering First Nations Excellence through life-changing initiative

3 minute read

As we reflect on the 2025 Asuria Employer Awards, we proudly recognise Voyages, Australia’s leading Indigenous tourism company, honoured as this year’s First Nations Excellence winner.

This award celebrates employers who go beyond traditional recruitment to create meaningful opportunities that empower First Nations people. Voyages stands out for its commitment to cultural tourism, sustainable practices, and profound respect for Indigenous knowledge—pioneering new pathways that enable First Nations individuals and communities to thrive.

Since 2022, Voyages and Asuria have joined forces on a transformative recruitment initiative providing First Nations participants the unique chance to relocate and work at one of Australia’s most significant cultural sites—Uluru. Supported by funding from the Department of Workplace Relations through the Employment Fund, this initiative helps trainees integrate into the local community, develop essential life skills, and build a solid foundation for future careers.

From the very start of recruitment, candidates receive support from Asuria’s dedicated First Nations team, who guide them through the process with respect for cultural obligations and backgrounds.

Voyages extends this care well beyond recruitment. New hires are welcomed at Ayers Rock Airport by a housing team member who assists them settling into their new homes at Ayers Rock Resort, offering guided tours and a warm introduction to the community. Recognising that many recruits are leaving home for the first time, Voyages provides ongoing support through the National Indigenous Training Academy (NITA) Residential Supervisors and a dedicated wellbeing team offering emotional and practical assistance.

This comprehensive support network also connects trainees with trusted Indigenous health providers, ensuring access to vital care and fostering a sense of stability and trust.

One inspiring success story is that of Harper, a young First Nations man who was named the Outstanding Achiever winner at the 2025 Asuria Employer Awards. Through a hospitality traineeship at Voyages, Harper received accommodation, transportation, and training, alongside wellbeing support. This opportunity gave Harper a renewed sense of purpose and equipped him with the tools to build a stable and fulfilling future.

When selecting this year’s winner, the judges praised Voyages for forging strong, trusting relationships with First Nations communities and offering comprehensive support that enables individuals to adapt, thrive, and succeed in new environments.

Voyages sets a powerful example of how inclusive practices and genuine support can transform lives and strengthen communities. Asuria is proud to continue this partnership, one that prioritises diversity and shows how recruitment done differently can pave the way for First Nations excellence.
