Exploring Possibilities and Setting Goals for AccessAbility Day 2018

3 minute read

During the week of 26th to 30th of November we took part in AccessAbility Day 2018 - a new Australian Government initiative developed to connect jobseekers with disability and employers. Employers across the country registered their willingness to host a jobseeker following on from our 2018 Challenge Video.

Participants were able to experience workplaces that aligned with their career interests and goals while showing off their skills and enthusiasm. Employers were also able to learn what a jobseeker with disability can bring to their workplace as well as hear from our job coaches about the available support we can provide. If you're an employer that wishes they took part you can stay up to date here.

National Australia Bank connected 12 of our jobseekers with NAB employees in Sydney, Brisbane and Adelaide for the day. NAB provided an individualised approach for the day by ensuring jobseekers were buddied with employees in their field of interest. Buddies introduced themselves and explained how NAB works and what their team does before discussing participants career goals.

With this in mind jobseekers shadowed their buddy for the afternoon to see what the roles involved and what they could offer.

The following is an excerpt from a review by Kairat (Pictured top - left)

"First, I would like to express my words of thanks and gratefulness to the organisers of this initiative. I would like to say many thanks to Ms. Vonda Copleston (NAB), who met me in the beginning before the program started.

Ms. Vonda helped me to feel confident by providing and telling warm words. I would like to say many thanks to Ms. Elly Jenkins (PeoplePlus).

Ms. Elly Jenkins informed me about this program several months ago and made my participation possible. It was a good experience which gave me an opportunity to spend one day at the National Australia Bank and to look at the corporate environment from inside and while participating in the working agenda of employees of the National Australia Bank."

We have had great feedback from our host employers as well and participants were encouraged to apply to open positions that aligned to their goals. We would like to express our thanks to all participants and employers that took part in this day and we will make sure next year is even better!
